What kind of sauna should I install in my home?
Traditional saunas are also called rock saunas, steam saunas, or Finnish saunas. A traditional type of sauna is made of cedar and must have a vapor barrier in the wall. Water must be tossed on the heating element of a steam sauna to moderate the humidity required to protect your lungs, skin and eyes. Steam saunas also require special power considerations and it may be that your home must be altered to suit these needs, including a space being allotted to house the sauna and its parts.
Infra red saunas are modular, do not require any major alterations to your home, and are easy to install yourself as they come in a pre-made kit form. This means you can disassemble your sauna and take it with you when you move. Unlike traditional saunas, the infra red sauna uses radiant heat, much like that from the sun (but without the harmful ultraviolet rays), to induce a healthy sweat. A steam sauna relies on the heat of the air and steam to heat your body, whereas the infra red sauna heats your body directly. Consequently, you can stay longer in an infra red sauna and get a much better sweat while doing so.
It is said that the infra red sauna can penetrate the body deeper than a traditional sauna. This is more efficient than a conventional sauna. As the infra red sauna uses less energy and allows you to stay and sweat longer, the benefits of installing an infra red sauna would be lighter on your pocketbook overall.
There are many benefits to having a good, healthy sweat on a regular basis. The heat from an infra red sauna induces an artificial fever like state in the body. Fever is a natural part of the body’s healing process. It causes the immune system to produce disease fighting white cells, antibodies and interferon (an anti viral protein with cancer fighting capability). Taking a sauna can help ward off flu and colds, relieve respiratory problems and help provide healthy skin and a clear complexion. The heat of a sauna can relieve pain, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and achiness, and increase flexion and circulation to the extremities. While sitting in a sauna, your heart rate increases while you sweat. This can help purge the body of toxins, provide weight loss (burn up to 900 calories in a 30 minute session), and give the heart a good cardio workout.
While infra red saunas are easier to install, are more energy efficient, cost less and let you sweat longer, choosing a sauna is a personal choice. Some people may prefer a traditional Finnish sauna. What works best for you, your family and your home will depend on what type of sauna you decide to purchase.
